Perspective: 30 Pieces Of Silver

There comes a time when you have to decide your worth as a leader, as an individual. Yes, we have marketable skills that we sell to clients and employers but are we willing to put a price on our character, integrity, values and faith? What are the worth of those traits? Are they for sale as well? Would you be willing to put a price tag on those items…let’s say “30 pieces of silver” so to speak?30PIECESOFSILVERJEN

If you are unfamiliar with the term “30 pieces of silver” it comes from the Bible in the story of Judas. Judas was one of the 12 disciples of Jesus. Before the Last Supper, Judas went to the Sanhedrin (the chief priest) and sold out the location of Jesus for 30 pieces of silver. It was then that the soldiers captured Jesus and took him to be crucified. And of course, in the end, Judas didn’t last long – he died 3 days later.

Right now in the US, we are having a social debate about law that protects the religious freedom for all in our country. And two, very vocal CEO’s have come out in opposition to this law from SalesForce and Apple.

In the case of SalesForce, Marc Benioff, has made statements that his organization is willing to pay for employees to relocate from Indiana. Mr. Benioff also stated that he did not know of any employee who was in favor of the law within his entire company. However, when I asked on Twitter – in two tweets – if Salesforce was supporting their Christian employees who supported the law, they would not respond. Eventually, I was sent a link by their social media team from Huffington Post written by a lower level senior manager that reiterated their stance on relocation of their employees.

From this interaction, I can only assume that SalesForce is ignoring the question or that they are ignoring part of their organization that does support the law. Are they truly respecting the diversity of all employees or just cherry picking the issue for the benefit of their CEO to make him appear to be a leader who is the “savior” of one side?

In Apple’s case, Tim Cook, wrote an Op-Ed piece for the Washington Post calling out both states embroiled in this battle for the RFRA law. However, Mr. Cook did not go so far as to pull out stores, pull out employees of either state or stop travel of Apple employees. Mr. Cook, unfortunately, failed to mention that Apple still has agreements in place in countries around the world that are far worst on human, women, and gay rights issues than the United States. The hypocrisy of his words and actions leads one to believe that he doesn’t really practice what he preaches to his employees.

In both cases, based on their actions, words and deeds, I surmise that these men would take 30 pieces of silver for their character, faith and values in exchange. Which makes me realize that when you follow false leaders – you tend to get what you pay for in the end.
